Washable and removable contact paper to match the wood
Since there is no room to tile, to protect the cabinet from heat and fire, I would put a piece of steel, aluminum, copper or stainless steel (last 2 most expensive options )

If you don't want to glue or screw it on, you could use heavy duty 2-sided tape.
Alternatively, you could use some tin tiles. You may be able to find any of the above at a Habitat store.
contact paper is a common fix, a piece of formica cut to fit that area and tacked there with glue dots is a bit more durable.
You can also try peel and stick tile. You might have to add an adhesive because of the steam from cooking but it's an inexpensive fix.
can you put up a piece of panelling that looks like tile? Should be easy to wipe down, can blend with a backsplash idea and can be easily switched up if you want to change to something different down the road
You could put up some contact paper.
