    HI Val,
The first thing you need to do is check your local code. Any electrical wiring in our area must be installed by an electrician. Make sure that it's legal to do your own. Below is a link about how to install an over range microwave. There is a link in the article with instructions about installing the wiring. My first over range microwave was wired in and was part of the actual unit. When that one died, we took it all out, got a new built-in oven, added a shelf above the oven and had an electrician add a new plug for our microwave. This works much better than the unit with the built-in microwave because ovens last longer than microwaves. I had to have at least 3 microwaves hardwired in before we changed to this arrangement. Wishing you the best.

You need an electric socket to plug it into.

A microwave requires a dedicated circuit. You need to find out what the Amp draw is for your particular microwave and then measure the length needed to pull a wire to the main box and add it to an open slot in your panel. When you find out the Amp draw and the length of run from the microwave to the main electrical panel, then you you can go to a website like engineering toolbox and find out the necessary wire size. Don't forget to find out what type and size of breaker your panel uses.
