I have a vintage singer sewing machine. I can't close it because the under layer is broken. How can I repair it to close?

If you have the model number, you can pull a manual and see if there are instructions.

Also, if you can post a picture of the issue that would help as well.

I would see if you can assess what is causing it to stay open. Is there something on the machine itself or the case that is causing it? If you can narrow down what is keeping it from closing, you might be able to adjust the stand/case accordingly.

  • It would be helpful if you could post a picture. Then we can see the problem and hopefully offer some solutions.

What part of the 'underlay' is broken - the metal hardware, or the wood?

Yes, please post a picture of your machine so that we could see what exactly you have to work with.

I don't how or have a camera to do that. The bottom of my Singer Sewing is wood. My grandmother left the machine with me when she past away some 70 years ago. When you relief the belt and fold down the head there is nothing to hold the machine head in place, it would just fall to the floor.

Thanks, it is. My Grannie left it to me when she past away approx 1958. Sorry to say this problem has existed for so long. For some reason i woule like to fix it. I can't close the machine. i guess as we age we try to tie up loose ends. I may try to sell it. I don't have any one that would make use of the machine. Thanks for your help.
