There are kits made for this exact issue at most home improvement stores. I've used one and it's fairly easy. Matching the texture is the hardest part.

Clean all of the loose drywall and joint compound from the cracked area. Apply fiber mesh tape over the crack. Use a dry mix joint compound. 20 minute compound works well. Spread the compound over the tape and crack. Spread the “ mud” over a wide area very thin, when dry, spread another layer over the first. The key is very thin applications. When dry, use bubble wrap dipped in mud to apply texture. You can knock down the high points to match the original finish. You may have to try the technique a few times to get the texture to match. Just scrape mud off to try again. The most important part of this is keeping each layer very thin and wide and applying primer paint over the entire patched area. When the primer is dry, the new joint compound will not show as different than the original finish when the paint finish is applied.
