Do I need to replace the regular drywall around my jacuzzi.

The house I just bought has a jacuzzi in the ensuite bathroom but no tile or any type of a tub surround to protect the walls. I would like to build cedar walls as a tub surround. I'm wondering if I I need to remove the drywall and replace it or can I just build over it with a proper water barrier.

in a wet area green board may be better..it's treated to resist moisture. CHeck with a contractor...
Marine plywood that they use for flooring in carpeted boats also is a good choice, just make sure it is the safe kind, not the one with arsenic. It is not cheap, but it is sturdy and holds up to wet conditions really well. We just finished replacing all the wood and carpet in our new to us 1989 fishing boat and I was surprised at how much of the wood was really good, with only parts that were rotting. The boat is as old as my youngest, but now, with some upholstery cleaning and cleaning up the water lines on the outside, you would think it was almost new.
