Do I use spackling or what to fix these places in my wall?

I would love to add a mantle, but I think it would look funny on an off centered fireplace.
Use dry wall patch or putty, comes with a little putty knife in a quart container. I've had to do that and it isn't difficult at all. Patch it, wait until its dry, lightly sand and paint over it.
I bought a putty that goes on PINK and turns completely white when dry, that is a big help since I am impatient when it comes to repairs.
I have done the same. Drywall patching compound. Let it dry overnight. Go over it with a damp sponge to smooth it out. Prime and paint touch up.
I'm with the pink spackle, and using a damp sponge. It is so much easier than sanding a lot, and cleaning up the dust.
