Need a cheap way to trim the outside wall of bath tub

Previous owners had left the shower curtain open and both sides of the bathtub drywall had gotten wet. It has since dried. I want to know what material can I trim outside of the bathtub to prevent from happening again? I dont want to replace the drywall just cover over. It's been dry for three years and just now has a gap.
