It's a messy job but good when done. Use a wide putty knife and scrape. Wear protective goggles. May have to skim coat when done, sand, prime and paint.

Or you can install 1/2" drywall over it. Use longer screws to get into joust. Finish smooth.

Not hard unless they are painted. It is a REAL MESSY job.

  • If it's not painted, it's pretty easy but very messy. Keep in mind, asbestos was banned from textured ceiling paints in 1977. Use plenty of drop cloths on the floor. Use a spray bottle (or a garden pump sprayer) to apply small amounts of water to the wet a workable area. Use a 4' puddy knife to gently scrape the material off. I like to hold a dust pan below to help catch the damp material before it hits the floor. They do make a specific tool for this (popcorn removal tool), it can be found at the larger home centers. Make sure the ceiling is completely dry before sanding the residue off. A pole sander makes the job easier. The ceiling also needs to be completely dry before using a ceiling paint with built in primer.
