Call him back to effect repairs. Hopefully you didn't yet give final payment. Check your written contract.

  • Question 1: why did you pay him if you were not happy?

Options: call him back to make right. Contact the license board and lodge a complaint against his license. Give him a bad review on social media sites. Hire someone else to fix.

Never ever provide final payment until you are 100% happy. Never fall for the "I will come back and fix or touch up" line, all lies in most cases.

I would demand he make repairs or file a lawsuit.

    Carol,

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. The simplest solution I can think of without redoing the ceiling is to use wood trim to cover the seams and make it look intentional. Trim would have been used that way to cover the seams of sheets of plywood sometimes used as ceilings for porches. Use plain 1x3 boards or another size that matches any existing trim. Is this the only place the seams are?

If this was me I would call whoever did this work and explain to them the problem. Was their any sort of warranty/guarantee connected to this job? Where they licensed and bonded? Tell them if this isn't fixed you will be contacting a lawyer. You don't want to but they are putting you in a position where legal guidance appears necessary. Ask them how they want to proceed. Document everything. Take pictures and then take more pictures. Keep all paperwork from this job no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. You want a paper trail.

First of all you said this particular ceiling is on your lani, so I’m assuming that you live in Florida or the south somewhere. If that’s the case, the spaces between the seams are to allow for movement in the ceiling due to humidity or even wind from a storm. They allow the ceiling to breathe. So don’t be so upset. Those spaces are there to allow your ceiling to last longer.

You can cover with trim boards, equally spaced at each seam point. Possibly even run some lengthwise to give it a boxed effect. If you don't like that, try covering with wood putty. Push deep into the seam and then scrape flat. Then sand smooth. You may have to paint instead of stain, although you may be able to use a full coverage deck stain.
