How do I repair drywall?

I’m horrible at DIY jobs. I am not sure I even have the proper tools.

Good news, Anthony! Drywall repair requires very little tools and mostly patience and attention to detail. There are different methods of repair depending on the size of the damage. Can you reply with more details so I can guide you?

Start by cutting the sheetrock, the size of a square. You can cut this with a sheetrock saw, watch the wires and shut the breaker for that room. Buy a half of sheetrock, at the Home Depot or Lowe's. You buy a paint stirrer, stick it behind the hole. Reach in and put the stick behind the hole, and screw it in so it catches behind the sheetrock. You can put a mesh screen where the space is and fill it with spakle. You might need more than 1 stick to put behind the wall, your repair looks like it has an odd shape. After you tape with spakle tape, you'll fill it with spakle. Let it dry completely. Then sand the spakle and make it smooth for painting.

I agree Laura. Surface damage that can be scraped, sanded, taped, and mudded.

I'm sorry Anthony, your photo did load the first time. I see it now.

Tools: sandpaper, 3" putty knife, and a 6" putty knife.

Materials: drywall compound (not spackle), spray can of Kilz primer, touch up paint that matches the wall.

Process: 1) scrape the surface to remove any loose material

    2) sand lightly to knock down ridges

    3) using small putty knife, put a first coat on the damaged areas.

    4) allow to dry for several hours or next day

    5) sand lightly

    6) using larger knife, put a thin second coat. Take your time on this so that it is as smooth as possible.

    7) allow to dry thoroughly

    8) sand until your fingers can't discern any difference between the original drywall and the repair.

    9) spray with primer

    10) allow to dry (this dries fast)

    11) paint with touch up paint.

It looks like the wall is smooth drywall with no texture. Texture requires an extra step. After the final drywall coat, spray with can of spray on texture and feather out to match existing wall. Proceed with primer and paint.
