How to get vinyl tile to stay on wall as a back splash

I decided to use vinyl floor tile as a back splash in my kitchen. I sanded the wall to remove leftover glue from wallpaper. I then sprayed floor adhesive on wall and on the back of the tiles. I cannot get it to adhere to the wall. Any suggestions?

  • Ok, got a few questions. You said you sprayed a floor adhesive on the wall and on the tile? I am stumped, I have never heard of spray floor adhesive before. In any case, most spray adhesives are flammable. Please make sure your pilot light is out on your stove and do not make any sparks or light anything. Next, there are two types of adhesives one is only applied to one surface and the material that is being applied gets placed against it and as it dries it sticks. The other is where you apply to both sides let dry then once the material comes into contact with the other it sticks, And it cannot be removed or slid around. Once it makes contact, your done. This type of product is used on laminate counter tops. Called contact adhesive. I think your issue is that the glue was applied to heavy. Normally when a glue that is applied that requires drying to become strong though evaporation or absorption it is on surfaces such as wood, paper etc. When you have a material such as vinyl or plastics or materials that are not porous a contact glue or adhesive is used as it dries in the air and fastens when it comes into contact with the mating surface that has the same dried material applied. I think you need to remove everything, get the right contact cement and follow the directions carefully. I think you used the wrong stuff or applied it incorrectly. If you think you did it right, let me know what you used, brand etc. Than I can provide a better answer for you.

I talked to the guy at Lowes and he told me that the self stick didn't need anything on it like the adhesive or glue as long as you sanded or 'roughed' the wall up a bit so it would stick on its own.
