You may need to fill twice then let it dry and take a sponge sand block and sand it down even with the wall.
I used Elmers wood filler worked for me .mine was in.a tube .
I use a plastic putty knife to fill as its flexibility makes it go on smoother, dry, sand, repaint. The trick is matching the paint.
Place however many wooden toothpicks it takes to fill the hole and break them off at wall level. Then spackle over them, sand, and you're done!
Believe it or not, try toothpaste.
I use sheet rock joint compound. It is pretty cheap and I apply it with a metal spatula thing. Let it dry. Sand it with a sanding block, much easier with a block. run your hand over and test for evenness. I find I have you pass over with the joint compound three times for medium holes before an even finish. (The joint compound shrinks as it dry's). If you do not sand before painting it will look horrible and the it will be even harder to fix, my last tenant did this, UUGGG! After you are sure you have an even finish apply a quick coat of primmer. (believe me, you can tell if you don't prime fresh compound and just paint over it) after priming paint. Maybe ask the landlord for any left over paint, so you will have matching paint.
Yep. I agree with Linda. Old renters trick. White toothpaste.
Fill the holes with joint compound. After it has dried lightly sand it and apply a primer. If you don't prime the spot you will see where the holes were patched.
