You can level them out with a buildup of drywall mud. Use thin layers and let it dry between layers. It's a process, but it'll work. Sand lightly as needed between layers and after final coat before painting. Good luck.

I would sand them before following Bijous_2010's directions. Try to take down any high spots. Also, you can buy cans of texture to finish the job. It's a bit tricky, but if you feather in your texture you can make it blend right in. Just remember, ALL drywall imperfections show once you paint it.

Use wall filler to parch any uneven surfaces and then sand before redecorating., or Line clad with timber or vinyl.
