Smoothing textured walls
I just bought a house with textured, plaster walls throughout the entire living room. What are the least expensive ways (relatively speaking) to get a smooth finish?
No really quick way to do it. Do one room at a time.

Dang, I was afraid of that!
if it is Popcorn looking acoustic stuff, you need a professional to remove it ...its a health hazard due to the asbestos in the product. It is cancer causing to inhale and in some states its illegal to be removed without using pro hazmat crew though I am sure its 'if you get caught' but its very bad for your lungs and its in the air for all to breathe...
Thanks. It's not popcorn, just thick texture that looks like the previous owners tossed hulled sunflower seeds into their sprayer and tossed down a few brewskis before getting it done.
Best to get a cheap test kit at your local big box home retailer to see if it contains asbestos....anything from 30s to 70s can contain asbestos. Otherwise, tape and plastic the walls and floors, then spray ceiling with warm water and scrape away. Best to get a fibersuit, hat and goggles for this job. Messy.
Its not asbestos. It was just the cheapest way to finish the ceilings and walls instead of taping, sanding and ensuring the Sheetrock was installed to accept wallpaper, paint, moulding or any other finish.
Its on t a one room at a time project. You're right, Sharon...I'll have to just go for it!
