I have used the aluminum self sticking patches sold in Home Depot. Just apply and then mud over, sand and paint.
If it is small you can just use putty and paint. If it is too large you will have to get a drywall patch. You can find this at a home depot etc which can be bought as an already made kit sometimes or you can also make your own. I caution that if it is too large you would have to patch large enough to secure it to a stud so it doesn't droop. You will also need putty to feather this in and then paint.
How big is the hole, if small, use spakle, you can get them at Home Depot (small holes only)
