How do you patch a hole in the wall? It's pretty big.

Sheet rock ? cut out the area around the hole with a Sheetrock saw; be sure it is 'square' ( straight lines -- and measure well! ) and cut a piece to fit the space -- put in the space, attach to the 2 x 4's behind it, mud and tape it; paint. https://www.lowes.com/projects/repair-and-maintain/patch-and-repair-drywall/project -- good tutorial here!

I wouldn't cut the hole in the wall first, cut the patch first. Make it slightly bigger than the hole, and cut it out. Then place it over the hole and trace around it. Then cut the hole to the size ofthe patch. Then follow the taping directions.

If the hole is not too big (like under 6x6 inches, I love the net tape that already has a metal plate attached. You can get a couple of sizes close to the hole size (go a tad bigger to make it stable). Just stick and blend with joint compound and you never see a seam or depression. Available in any hardware supply store for about $10 dependent on size.
