Suggestions for 1960's "paneling" on all of the walls

We have a cabin built in the 1960's that has ALL of the walls covered in light wood paneling. You know the type that has the black lines? The colors of the cabin are, deep green moss color carpet accents of rust, deep reds and other greens. Any suggestions to update the paneled walls? It is just TOO much wood, overwhelming and dated looking. Help!

I've painted my paneling & it looks better. No special technique, just painted it whatever color I wanted.

I painted some of mine, and ended up having to apply about 3 coats to cover them. Wallpaper was so much easier, apply it and your done!

We painted our paneled 70's kitchen bright white...it was easy and used only one coat...we didn't prime because the paint had primer. It made a world of difference and everyone who sees it thinks it bead board. I haven't regretted it for one minute. Paint those walls!

  Thanks so much for your answer. I would love to paint it. It would really look more updated! I suggested it to my husband and he was NOT so sure!! I will still keep working on him! I like the idea that it looks like bead board. I did not think of that and you know you are right, it would. Stay warm in your area of the country. Have friends in Louisville who have been freezing! I would definitely paint it. The problem with the wallpaper is that years down the road, if there is any yellowing, you will see where the indents where the black lines are. My dad bought a house and sadly is heated with ventless heaters, causing awful orange/yellow discoloration on everything. The previous owners covered part of the wall with wallpaper and the lines show through the wallpaper.

  @Rachel Z Thanks for your ideas! I agree that wall paper is NOT a good idea. It gets really cold up there in the mountains and you have the heat on and then the summers are hot, so I can imagine what wall paper would look like. I think it would be better if we lived there all of the time, but since we don't there will be extremes in temperature. I also just spent hours getting really old wall paper off of the bathroom walls up there and that "cured" me of using wall paper! I would rather Paint anyday! Thanks, my dad was from PA, Mary
