We don't want to have to redo the wall itself.

Hi Christi, I did this for a living for years, and the best way is to use a wallpaper steamer. You can buy one fairly inexpensive at Lowe's or Walmart, or you can rent one! It will have instructions with it! You will need to get a soft plastic scraper, and it shouldn't hurt the walls underneath.

    Good luck!

there is a handy little wallpaper tool called a shark. you just run it over the wall paper and it scores is. Then spray with fabric softener, don't drench it, and it should peel right off.

We have a house that was built in 1910. There was drywall over old lathe and plaster that was covered in several layers of wallpaper. Scored it with that shark tool, its just a palm sized rotary tool with little blades on a roller. Run it around the sirface and spray again. That softener will get into those scores and should make it much easier to pull down.

For some vinyl covered papers you need to peel off the top layer then wet the paper stuff left on the wall. The time to clean the wall for another treatment is as you take off thes layer. Often just water will work. There is a commercial liquid that may help.

soak the wall with water (small area at a time) take a paint scraper to the wet wall to remove as much as possible. AS you get closer to the wall surface, try to rub the last pieces off to avoid damaging the wall. Sorry to say, there really isn't an 'easy' way to remove wall paper, it's messy and labour intensive.
