How to Install an Outlet in a Desk or Table Top

Having an outlet with a USB port close at hand is almost a necessity, especially if you spend a lot of time at a desk crafting or on the computer, or work from home. I found a grommet-type outlet that installs through a hole in the desk or table top that includes USB ports for easy electronics charging or power, and it is really easy to install!

I started by marking the position of the outlet on the top, taking note of anything that could interfere with drilling the hole. For example, my desk has cubbies under the top and also has a support stretcher under the cubbies. I had to locate the outlet so that I could drill the hole (actually, two - one through the cubby!) without hitting the support.

I used a brad point drill bit to start the hole because my hole saw bit has a tendency to jump around!

Once I drilled the starter hole, I drilled a larger hole using a hole saw. Measure the diameter of the outlet and use a hole saw that matches in size. The outlet will fit snugly in the hole.

I also drilled a second smaller hole in the cubby below for the cord to pass through. I pushed the outlet in place then plugged it in!

There are two outlets in easy reach for my desk lamp and the cord for my computer, as well as two USB ports! See the blog post for materials and additional information!
