Electrical work can be frustrating and dangerous. I've got 5 tips you should know that will make wiring a light switch a lot easier.
You might know some of these but maybe not all 5
Here are my tips
1. Turn the electricity off at the panel or fuse box (I bet you know this!!)
2. Score the switch tabs
3. Check the electricity is off with a non-contact voltage tester
4. Take a picture of the existing wiring setup
5. Rub the copper wire with emery cloth.
Scoring the switch tabs stops you from pulling the paint off the wall with the old switch.
Non-contact voltage testers are an absolute must for any electrical project.
One time I shutoff the breaker but still got shocked, yah that was fun.
So don't assume you know which breaker feeds electricity to the switch.
Taking a picture of the existing wiring helps with the new wiring setup. This is also pretty smart.
Rubbing the copper with emery cloth ensures good electrical contact. It takes a few seconds and is worth it.
To see all these tips in action check out my video tutorial over on Home Repair Tutor.
There's also a give away that might save your life :D
Cheers,
Jeff
