You've pretty much ruled out every possibility. If an indoor antenna does not do the job you will need an outdoor antenna (I did). If you don't want to do the outdoor antenna (it was not fun up on the roof) there is cable or a satellite dish. If you don't want to pay for cable and you have obstructions (trees or tall buildings) that keep you from using a satellite dish, you could use the video services available on the Internet using something like a Roku. You have to have Internet service and you will not receive local channels, but then Cable, which is needed for Internet, is expensive.

Many Many years ago the only antenna we had was one of those that you placed on top of the television which wasn't very good so we placed it in the ceiling and everything was fine. i just thought that was back in 1965 Joan

Most people are abandoning TV -- fake news, low-intellect junk, etc. -- and just watch most things on the internet. You can be much more selective and you're not bombarded with subliminal programming.
Do you have internet service? If so you can buy a Roku (one time purchase, no monthly fees) and watch internet TV. We pay for Netflix and Hulu which comes up to under $20 a month but there are plenty of free channels to choose from.
😊
Sometimes you can get just basic cable. It's about 13 channels and might have the best of what you like. I have the ROKU streaming stick and I love it. But Karen is right. I watch tv on www.tvguide.com and ABC.com, etc. There are so many options these days. Hope that helps.
We have both digital and non-digital TVs. I don't have cable or an outdoor antenna, but, stream some TV through my internet, and pick up local channels with a flat antenna that works best if you can place it near a window. Here are several like I mentioned and have:

For the internet connection, I use my wifi set-up and subscribe to services like Sling TV and Netflix. Much cheaper than cable.
