@Vicki, my husband is talking about adding more ceiling fans to our a/c house. We are 67 and 75. He says if we ever need to cut our electric bill drastically, that ceiling fans don't use as much electricity as the a/c.
The dust on the ceiling fans bothers me, but hubby never sees it. I have a long handled bristle broom that dusts the fans we can reach without a step or ladder and it does fine. Sometimes I tie a rag around it, sometimes I don't. A couple of times a year, I ask my son or daughter-in-law to clean the higher ones for me.
If you do decide to remove the ceiling fans, you might consider this: just remove all the fan blades and mounts, but leave the fan mechanisms. Store the blades (labeled if you might forget) in an out-of-the-way closet or garage. Then if you change your mind later, you just have to replace the blades and mounts. If you are afraid someone will turn on the fans, tape the switches or label them.
Just an idea. Bless you 😇
How high is high? Many dusters come with extension handles. I use a collapsible painting rod with an empty hand roller on the end. Secure a towel around where the roller would be with a rubber band and I can reach the blades and even the corners of any room.
Yes, keep the fans, keep the air moving and circulate the air. Your home will be fresher. Open your windows at night and enjoy the cooler air with your fans on. The fans use less energy than you air conditioner, as it turns on and off or runs all the time. Do not use the fan lights, the lights heat the air around them. As for dusting, yes, invest in a long handle extension duster. I have one, they are great!
I have central a/c and use the ceiling fans all the time summer and winter. It helps blow around the cool air in summer and same for winter. Also great on days when you can open everything up and get fresh air and just need a little air movement. I would keep them for now and just invest in a good tool to dust the fan blades. That is my vote.
Ahhh yes, Georgia. And yes, allergies and humidity. What works best for you two. Stay healthy!
Thank you very much for all wonderful tips. I decide to keep all those ceiling fans as is. I will use longer handle painting rod with hand empty roller to wrap micro cloth around with rubber bands to dust without ladder.
U all are champ helps. Appreciate that very much.
you may regret it when you get older and are more sensitive to heat. I'd get a long handled duster or vacuum with long hose. I vacuum ours with a long hose, it only takes a few minutes, is easy, and I do not do ladders. Use a brush on a "bent" enxtender the end of the hose that will easily do sides and tops.
again, thank you very much all for ur helpful ideas on all those comments. two thumbs.
