Most houses made 30 years ago probably use standard Romex type wire. A 20 amp circuit uses 12 AWG wire and it is hard to work with. 15 amp circuits use 14 AWG which is easier to work with (smaller). Get an electrician or electrical-knowledgeable person to help you.

Having the right tools makes a huge difference. If you have a good wire stripper it's not that hard to cut, strip, and loop the wire. Clearly this is a struggle for you so it's not worth taking the chance you have an ill fitting connection that might come loose in the future. Best to call an electrician.

I would be inclined to call an electrician since you have 30 yr old wiring just to be safe

I would suggest using a wire cutter, then stripping a new section of wire to reveal a straighter section of wire that you can use for the 'stick in' part of the new receptacle. I've also found needle nose pliers very helpful.

I know it goes without saying, but remember to turn off the breaker! You may also want to grab a voltage tester to make sure there is no electricity present before touching anything. Also, never do electrical work alone.
