They sell "swag kits" at big hardware stores (and online). They are a long plug cord and a chain with a hook. A little retro looking, but the simplest solution. If you don't want to use the chain, you can buy that plastic tubing that hides cords and paint it to match the ceiling/wall so it camouflages.
We did this in our master bedroom in an old 1898 home we bought. My husband used a heavy duty plant hanger from the ceiling, the same color as the ceiling. You have seen those old fashioned hook plant hangers for heavy plants. Anyway, he put up a light with a long cord, bought a gold chain to match (today he would have bought a brushed nickel looking chain) and laced the cord around it to the plug. It hid/disguised the cord and plug very well! The chain and cord had a second hook near the wall in the ceiling for it to hang straight down. THe chain/cord had a swag from the light to the hook near the wall, then went straight down, if that makes any sense. (think swag lamps from the 70's)
thank you
