How can I install 3 hole Grounded Electric Outlets to upgrade my home?
A number of the outlets are still the old 2 Prong un-grounded type, can I ground the new outlets to the receptacle box where the ground wire is attached?

Yes you can! As long as the box is metal. Screw a green wire to the box, preferably in the back, and connect it to the ground screw on the outlet. Did this in my mothers home several years ago.
Thanks!
No. Nothing is truly "grounded" unless you have a ground wire that returns to the circuit breaker. Grounding to the metal box the old outlet is in only energizes the box and provides no protection. You need to instal tamper resistant GFCI outlets per NEC code. The GFCI protects the person, but will not protect the device you plug in. You will have to use the sticker that comes with the GFCI that says something like, "Not Ground Protected." You would not want someone, perhaps a future owner, from thinking these were properly grounded receptacles.
