How do I screen a sconce to make it less bright?
I have 2 walk sconces in a stairwell. They are open on the top, like most sconces. When descending, they are eye piercingly bright. How can I safely shade them on top? The overall brightness is needed to illuminate the stairwell, so a lower wattage isn't going to help. Thanks.

To make them safe when something is placed on top use LED bulbs because they don’t throw of any heat. Once the LEDs are put in you can use whatever you like on top of the sconces.
can the bulbs be changed out to a smaller watt bulb?
You can get some perforated metal sheets. Make a template for the sconce opening with some stiff paper or cardboard. Add about one inch more around the template. Cut the metal sheet using the template. Bend the added one inch extra and friction fit the metal sheet into the top of the sconce. Will block some of the light and the perforation will allow heat to escape.

I agree with William's idea. I was thinking of the 12x12 sheets of decorative metal they sell at home depot.
