You can purchase battery lights that you push on and off. The most affordable are at the dollar store.
Home Depot sells battery operated wall mounted lights that can be hung above the door inside your closet.
First, try to lighten it up with bright paint - use enamel for best reflection. For lights, you can try putting up rope lights or battery-powered accent lights or even tiny christmas lights if you have a plug for them - tack them around the closet on the ceiling.
Ha! Mine are too! Cheap builder wanted to save money . . . Hard to see your stuff at 5 am withought light, especially in winter trying to find black, brown or navy items! They sell battery powered touch lights, how about installing some of those? Or hire an electrician to run you new electrical to each closet.
