Is it as easy as attaching old wires from the house to the new wires in the bell?
You may need to replace the wiring from the doorbell to the wall where you put your new ringer. Get a current tester to see if your wire is still good.

you could also replace it with a Ring doorbell that has a camera on it for security purposes so you know who is at your door without actually going to the door (it requires a smart phone)
