I took the fixture down checked the wires, and sockets. The one socket that flickers had a dark area on one of the contacts. Cleaned contact, with sandpaper, put it back together, and it still flickers. What else can I do to stop the flickering?

Not the answer you wanted, I'm sure- but replace it. The risk is fire from an electrical short- You can buy a new one for under a hundred dollars- or you could do what we did. Bought an old "brass" one at GoodWill for 8 bucks, sprayed it with Rusteolum "Hammered Bronze" paint. total cost under $20.

Replace it. It is not worth taking the risk of a house fire from a faulty electrical fixture

The dark area is probably a scorch mark. Replace and don't take risks. You could lose your whole house trying to save a few cents. Definitely not worth the risk to your home or your life if the house catches fire. Please ensure you have good smoke alarms in your home while you are at it. More people die in fires due to being asleep at the time and overcome by smoke than need to. We see a house fire and deaths every week or other week on the news and why risk it? Doesn't only happen to 'other people'. To those 'other people' we are their 'other people' after all! Check your electrics by a professional, replace any damage and use smoke alarms and change and test batteries on them regularly. Please! Sorry for the lecture.
