Best filling material for a futon?

It's typical futon. Lost plumetness quickly. I have a sewing machine. Just want best filling material. I will be adding the buttons back on.

    The one futon we had was made of a cotton batting material (that is why they weigh a ton) and it does compact rather quickly... You might consider replacing the cotton batting with a memory foam mattress instead... it would be a lot more comfortable to sit or sleep on... If you did not want to pay for a 5 or 6 inch deep one... just layer several of the thinner ones (and you could put a higher density one in the center of the layers). then cover with what ever material you want

    Agree with what Marty said.

    If you are going to go to the work of covering a new sleeping mattress, then use dense-core foam, or the memory foam. It is lighter and more pliable to work with than the old style batting and it will bounce back to hold its shape for a far longer time.

    If you do decide to put the buttons back on, use long upholstery needles, and heavy duty button-hole-twist-thread.
