How do I protect outdoor wooden furniture?

My husband built a couple wood tables for my patio using old house lumber from a remodeling project. I originally coated them with an outdoor spar varnish but now after a couple years in the sun they are peeling and flaking the varnish off. I plan to use a hand sander to clean the surface off but want something that will last outside better and not flake off. Maybe there's a waterproofing system I'm not aware of or some product that is absorbed into the wood?

  • Wood usually has to be redone every year or two when it’s in the weather. Coating with a good stain and weatherproof top coat are best, but it will still need to be redone every year or two to protect wood. For my outdoor porch swing, I sand it and stain each fall to make sure it stays fresh for winter and through the summer.

No, that is the nature of wood. Lots of maintenance. Exterior deck stain is your only other option.

Alexis and Kelli are correct. There will always be some maintenance with wood every few years. Spar varnish does give the best and longest protection.
