How do I treat old rocking dog?

It’s adorable! I love using Howard’s Feed n’Wax for reviving and protecting old wood.

Your piece is beautiful. The wood just needs conditioning. Clean it well then use one of the wetter waxes first, like Howard's Feed n 'Wax. There are other brands too. Then wait for that to absorb, and in a month or two use a hard wax. You can find all of it at Lowes or Home Depot.

What a stunning acquisition. Are those glass eyes? Agree with the above posters with the beeswax product recommended. I have found it on Amazon and in big box flooring stores like floor and decor. It should give your dog a wonderful protective luster.

The beeswax products are wonderful for restoring wood. You could also consider just a stain that matches his color already. Those oil based wood stains the wood will also soak up and they will add a real luster as well.

You already got lots of great advice, so I just wanted to tell you what an adorable piece you have. I love it!

When I was young, there was a show with a gentleman who gave tips on wood restoration and such. Not sure if it really was his name but it was Homer Formby. He said to “hand rub” wood using tung oil. It feeds the wood and makes it look really pretty. Hope this helps.

I would use a oil, depending on the type of wood it is. A light sanding will be in order too

That is darling. I recently used Howard's on a wood project and I was very pleased. It didn't change the color it just conditioned the wood.

Murphy's oil soap 2 clean lightly and used coffee grounds r natural stain an 4 cracks maybe wood shims or toothpicks a lil wood glue or filler

Clean well first, Murphy's is good. Let dry overnight and put on a couple of coats of tung oil. The oil will soak in to the wood and prevent any further drying of the wood. Let it sit for an hour or two between coats, when it won't absorb any more you know you have enough on. Wipe off any extra oil. It will also help to close up the cracks.

I would do a deep nourishing treatment with oil. See if you can determine the type of wood so you have the best oil. I think it is so cute.

What a cool find, how lucky are you! It's hard to know what kind of wood it is from the photo but if you take it to someone who deals in wood, they should be able to identify it. You could try Restor-a-finish or Feed n' Wax after a gentle cleaning with vinegar. Either of those products will nourish and protect the wood.

You. Hold. Len it first with Murphy’s oil soap then when totaly dry put a wood conditioner .try home depot

This is so cute. First you would need to identify what kind of wood was used, then choose an appropriate ol to be applied on it.

Thank you all for your helpful comments - just an update, I have cleaned and used Danish oil on my "dog" and here is the results so far (may need another coat or two) also the inspiration behind my purchase - my rescue dog Candy, my true pride and joy!xx

For the cracks epoxy would work well. Boos Oil will condition the wood. Make sure you let it sit overnight, and

you remove any excess residue…..
