How do you re-finish a porcelain bathtub?

I had my porcelain bathtub re-finished a few years ago and am wondering if I would be able to somehow re-finish it myself. It is peeling off in a big area on the floor of the bathtub.

Honestly that is a job for a professional. Re-finishing porcelain is really a tough job.

Janet is right. There are kits available for the DIY, but they tend to only last about five years. Pros can do a better job and it can last a lot longer. Home Depot and Lowe's carries refinishing kits. So go there and check them out.

Consider the cost of DIY, your cost in time, quality of finished work and its lifespan, the cost of another pro repair, and its life span, or the cost of replacement that will increase your home investment's value. Kitchen and bathrooms, no1 value investments in home improvement.

Hate to be a spoil sport but my son in law does this for a living and he says once it's done can't do again....don't know why but my has been refinished and I'm not encountering that kind of problem...you can only clean a refinish safely with bar keepers friend and gently..no scrubbing....bleach and vinegar will destroy the finish among other things. If you find someone who says he can do it, extract a warranty from him. And definitely don't try to do this yourself!

If it is already needing to be refinished then something is wrong with the original work.I would call back that person, get them to inspect it,and see if they can fix it!

Refinishing, unless done by a highly (and I do mean highly) skilled craftsman is a temporary fix. It will look ok for a while. The original surface of the tub is porcelain. This is created by glazing and firing in a kiln. Refinishing is just scuffing the porcelain finish and applying another finish. It isn't the same as the original. I've seen these refinishing jobs last when the users are ultra careful and they receive light duty. I've seen them wear out quickly as well. For the amount of money it costs to refinish, and now refinish again, you might be better off pulling the tub and replacing it with something new. Just my two cents worth.

Years ago I had a tub that was awful, I bought those little mosaic tiles and sanded the whole inside of the tub & tiled it. I used a 2 part epoxy glue from Laticrete, Once tiling was finished & the grouted, shower time was a dream especially in winter. On a chilly day when that hot water hits those stones it's pure heaven! You step warm tub floor.

I had my porcelain tub refinished as wanted more shiny and newer looking, but it started bubbling and peeling off after a few years. Had someone take that all off and just went back to the original porcelain. Left well enough alone after that.
