How would you fill these gaps in?

I bought this dresser at a thrift store with the intention of chalk painting it. I don't want the plank look on the sides. I want them to be smooth. I believe the dresser has been varnished. I have wood putty and joint compound. Would either be good to use or should I buy another product?

Go to your local hardware store ( Home Depot) and ask them to tint your wood putty or ask what would be the best to use.

So you believe that wood putty would "stick" in the grooves? I should sand the groove before putting in the putty, right? I would, of course, sand and prime the putty before painting. I want a smooth, solid looking side.

Yes you are on the right track with sanding the groove first. Apply the wood filler pushing it in with your finger. Over fill it just a bit so when you sand you don't have any of the groove come through. I have done this numerous times, works great if you sand perfectly flat. Did you know wood filler has glue in it? It won't fall out after it's dried and painted, don't worry and good luck.

PS I forgot to say wood putty, wood filler or just plain old spackling will work for your project. The joint compound may sand away too easily I think

I once did a whole kitchen wainscotting with spackling, sanded and painted and it looked great 7 years later when we moved.

I use Durham's. It gets supper hard and then you sand it.

I have fixed pieces a dog had eaten on several pieces of furniture. Works like a charm. But primer it before painting. That way the paint will grab.

I would use bondo. It's cheaper then wood putty , comes in a bigger can and sands easily.
