use a protectant
there is a citrus based oil on the market that is used by manufacturers of new furniture because it helps the wood age & dry without splitting...& replenishes wood fibers that are drying out..."Howard's Feed & Wax" many stores carry it or google it & get it on-line.
I would use a polyurethane primer sealer. I like Sherwin Williams XIM clear.
