If you want you could take all the veneer off totaly by hosing down the top real good let the water sit on top and the wood veneer will bubble up and you just pull it off and wipe all the glue off and re finish the top

You could try to patch the veneer with wood putty. If you go this route, make sure it is stained to match before applying.

Another option is to remove it but since there is a diamond pattern you may not want to do this.

A third option is to keep only a small area of the veneer that is in good shape, removing the rest.

Finally, you could just clean it up well with denatured alcohol and then seal it with a poly or varnish. Preserve the chips and cracks, gluing them down first if there are any places it is coming loose. This will showcase all the life it has endured while giving it new life. You can also add a glass top to further preserve it. Hardware stores that cut glass for window replacements would probably be your best bet for that. Or try and find plastic/plexi and cut to fit.
