I'd like to add a cabinet on top of my cabinets

I'd like to add a small cabinet above my cabinets but not change color of what I have. Could I put a dull black cabinet above it or should I do something else? Any ideas?

I think by adding a cabinet your going to change the look of your kitchen. If there is a storage problem I would look into other options.

The problem comes from trying to match the color and grain of the wood. Wood darkens over time when it is exposed to light and air. Even if you used the same wood and stain it won't match. As far as using and different color, dull black, that is really up to your own individual taste.

That sounds nice. You may want to try propping a set of doors up then stand back and see how it looks.

Is the problem all the things taking up room on your countertop? Adding cabs will really close in your room, especially when the cabs are dark. If you already have a space for a table/chairs, then I'd modify the island - you have considerable room where the stools are. This could be open shelves where you could store your large mixer (see there is an outlet in the island), and other items that taking up room on your countertop.

I would put a wooden frame up there with frosted door fronts and lights inside
  • Helen Helen on Aug 24, 2015
I like Shauna's suggestion if you're going to close the space. [I've always thought those spaces at the top were such dust collectors.] I think a dark colour will make the room look smaller.

I would not put a cabinet at the top as it would close the already dark kitchen even more. If you need additional space, put decorative items at the top, such as bowls, unusual bottles and other collettibles and less attravtive items inside the cabinets.

@Liliana Wells why does everyone say dark its really not. except when gloomy and lights are off

just a thought and not one I've thought through but why couldn't you paint the door fronts the same colour as your walls or a light co-ordinating colour? It would brighten it up or perhaps go with the colour of the ceiling? TO draw the ceiling down to to cupboards? I'd use something washable though. Dull might not be so easy to clean. I love the idea of lighting inside! I find most kitchen NEVER have enough light. They sell strip lightng with tiny lights that are soooooo easy to install.

@Pamela Langone is it possible for you to take a pic of the area you want to change - print it off on your computer and then color in the areas with markers to give you an idea of how it would look. Say coloring the area above the cupboards you want to add with a black marker( your original choice) and then color one with the wall color in- is it yellow I see in your picture -maybe a third print with white if your ceiling is white? I think maybe just putting a piece of plastic over the computer print and changing the plastic for each color might be cheaper than printing all those prints. Or adding cut out sections of paper you've colored with your choices? Like paper doll dresses? I'm not sure I am articulating my idea here very well. Then slide one cut out of your cupboard drawing on and the other one off? This way you can try out as many options as you want before commiting. You can also draw in any style door you'd like to see before doing the work. Try the open ones with glass or painted ones - Framing the doors in one color while painting the inset another color- Perhaps add glass with chicken wire behind it and the small lights inside. HAVE FUN - EXPLORE ALL YOUR DREAMS all at the price of a little printer ink and some markers and plastic sheeting or paper. Way cheaper and visuals ARE ALWAYS better than just ideas when trying to convince a hubbie that your ideas will work.

We are getting ready to remove the closed in space over our cabinets and adding cabinets where they were. Our cabinets are white so it's not a big deal but if our cabinets were dark I would add cabinets with glass doors and lights, maybe, but it could store nice items that you don't often use...that is what I am going to do.

I agree with glass doors and lights...They leave a nice glow, when other lights are off, and the cabinets are not visually imposing like they would be with heavy black wooden doors.

What is your goal? For storage of some seasonal decor only items, I suggest baskets (on sale cheap ones from Michaels) You can hide items in them! Make a cheat sheet for yourself as to what is in each...or get the ones with small chalkboard labels on them to label? Need to know goal before deciding how much $$ to spend.

I was talking about the new cupboard doors. If you paint them the color of the walls or the ceiling it would blend in with the surrounding not add more dark color from existing doors. I assume there will be new doors or you'd just have the same open space you now have right? Am I completely misunderstanding? LOLOL Wouldn't be the first time LOLOLOL

easy enough to try on one color or the other with a print out. Maybe you can find a program online that will let you download your picture of the cupboards and then you can digitally(?) change it with the program? I am not computer literate enough for that but you or a friend might be? I know they exist but I wouldn't know where to find one or how to find them.

I have decorated with a mixture of jars, small pictures with abstract design, cute cloth covered giraffe and elephant found at Homegoods. I also found cheap colorful glass bottles for up there also. I used a few different shades of color to pick up on the colors in my area rugs. Set your pretty thing up there maybe with a few fake plants or flowers. You will love it!

OOHH sorry for all the info. I did not see stated anywhere what your purpose for the cabinets was going to be. Good Luck

If it's for your fine china, then I would agree with the frosted, or clear glass fronts if you want display in addition to storage. For cohesion, you can stain the wood to match your existing cabs. I have matched before - you may have to work with 2 or 3 dif stain colours at the same time, but it can be done. Then polyacrylic (non-yellowing) on top. Have never noticed a problem with fading, etc. on anything I've done.

We agree with the other commenters. Glass front cabinets would look great. To give you the gist, check out the photo in this post: http://goo.gl/IEuoHg

I think that black would be too dark. What about some lovely wicker style baskets? Tho' if you are going to store chinaware, you might want something a bit more durable. Glass fronted doors, either clear or frosted would look lovely, then you can display whatever you wish.

I added matching cabinets and they look great. Makes the room feel taller too.
