How do I make lower kitchen cabinets?

I have 3 grand-daughters the same age. We are building a playhouse for them that we hope they will enjoy from age 4 to 10, so we want their kitchen to have a counter that will require a step stool now but will be the perfect height by age 8. My son & I are not carpenters so we're looking for a beginner level project, and at a price one would expect to spend on a playhouse.

Look at thrift stores for an old microwave cart. Remove the casters and paint. It should be the height you are looking for (thinking about my own 9yo). It would also provide a little storage for play pots and pans.

I want something with doors (cooking toys can look messy), and I would like to fill a corner. We will have a formica top professionally installed. I wonder how little people and wheelchair-bound people deal with this problem---probably with expensive custom made cabinets---out of our budget!
