It sounds like you have a sealer in some places or something got on that area. Get a granite cleaner and use it all over concentrating on the shiny area. Make sure you read the labels before you purchase the "right"one.
Let it dry & seal it with granite/marble sealer. This needs to be done twice a year. Granite is porous, but nowhere as bad as marble.
Make sure it says Non-Yellowing Formula.
Sounds like there may be some polish on it or the other areas are worn down due to use. I have never had granite. I have only had laminate or quartz counters.
Hi Ann, it sounds like you may have stains, or the seal on the granite may be wearing, which will allow staining , you should remove the stains and reseal it.
