Help! I have a beautiful old Welsh dresser, drawers are stuck shut!!

I have a great Welsh dresser, huge, old, oak.The drawers are stuck shut from years of standing in a drafty farmhouse. I am going to sell it, but will have to get the drawers open!
The drawer sides are thick....any ideas??

Hello SLS Construction..Thanks for the reply..it has now been in my warm house for 18 months..still stuck..I have tried bumping and wiggling drawers from underneath..no luck....any other ideas..short of an ax??
  • Set it down on it's back and try pushing firmly against the back of the drawers (with a few good hits thrown in might help - assuming there is no bottom panel) Once you get one you should be able to get the others - you may need to run a putty knife around the drawers first (see next step) Ok you have a bottom - 2 putty knives & maybe even a thin pry bar - carefully work all the way around the drawers seeing if you can get some wiggle room - once you have enough for the pry bar and putty knife use the pry bar as a backstop against the wood & start prying away

The drawers must have some sort of pulls to open them..if just wooden knobs, cut them off, push screw through towards inside, then stick a bit larger round but long screw driver in knob hole, this will give you the pull power you need to pull open.

Once you get it open turn the drawers upside down and rub a bar of soap along the edges where they roll along the inside of the drawers. It will keep them from sticking.
