How to prepare unfinished wood for staining and stenciling Marquetry on risers. Will have boards lying flat for this project.

Stenciled Stairs Worth Staring At!
If your base coat is white or another light color, seal it first with shellac to seal in any tannins. Otherwise, the wood will yellow, especially if there's knots.
For stencils, offload the paint onto a paper plate until your roller is almost dry. You need way less paint than you think.
