The dog has chewed the front boards of a built in bookshelf - fixes?

Chocolate Lab vs bookshelf...Lab wins! The cross board that fronts the bookshelf is destroyed. Not sure if it comes off as a separate piece or not. Any ideas?

I would empty the bookshelf, lay it on it's back and look to see if the front board is attached maybe by screws or whatever. Try to take it off and replace it, or if possible and it's not too badly wrecked turn the board over and use the other side. If that is not possible perhaps you could fill in the damage area with wood filler, sand well and re-stain or paint it. If that is not an option then you'll could try to fill it in as best you can and cover it with a laminate.

You can get some water putty or other wood filler and rebuild the chewed area. Then sand and repaint or stain. Some wood filler comes in different color stain.

Dogs don't like the smell of lemon or vinegar. You can try cleaning the wood with lemon oil or spraying the area in front of the bookshelf with 100% vinegar, Keep vinegar away from any plants though, it may damage or kill them - after you repair it, of course.

  • Repaint it or stain it and call it a day. Part of having loving puppies. Consider it "character" to your piece. Or take the bookshelf apart, replace the bad piece, paint or stain and put back together.
