I have a bedside table that has the top damaged, but the rest is still in great condition. I would like some ideas as to what could be added to the top.

Sand - steps available here: http://www.lostandfounddecor.com/how-to-refinish-a-table-dresser-part-1/ Post a before and after photo - would love to see your finished work.

Without a picture of the table , it's hard to say . My advice is to sand it down really well , clean it, stain or repaint it. Then apply several coats of polyurethane , lightly sanding between each coat.

If you are not a stainer, you can either lightly sand and paint, or purchase some contact-type vinyl and cover the top. I've done both with good results.

Measure the size and go in search of a piece of marble or granite or what ever to go on top of it. Stores that sell stone often have small pieces left over. Ikea has marble pieces for the kitchen that can be used. I have found marble pieces in job lot stores. I found two pieces of marble at a yard sale that worked well on my IKEA end tables that were really small 2 drawer cabinets.

Depends on the look you are going for but a light butcher block piece would add a rustic feel

A mirror. It will reflect the light of the lamp. OR you could put a piece of fabric on the night stand top and put a piece of glass over that.
