My vote s for some sort of stone or marble top. Check the remnant and bits and pieces section of your local stoneyard. There are always great finds for pennies on the dollar. Tile would be another way to go too!
You could use anything that you want, but I would suggest using solid wood, not laminate. The wood you could paint or stain as you wish with what you wish after a little sanding and apply some coats of poly to help it withstand the moisture in the laundry room.
Composite marble (Maybe Fire Hearth)
I would just go to the lumber store to pick up a couple pieces of nice pine, or you could even get the white melamine which would work good in a laundry room.
I think Ć piece of honed Carrera Marble would look great.
Maybe they would have an off cut or DIY Store may have a Fire Hearth or try secondhand - Craig's List etc.
Go to any of the granite and marble specialty shops. They always have odd pieces sitting outside that you can pick from. It's kind of like a little marble, granite and quartz salvage area. Great for when you're looking for a small piece.
An old door would work. You could cut it to the size you want.
