The Sneaky Way to Fix Stuck Drawers

Don't you just hate wonky drawers that always seem to get stuck or fall of the rails? Me too. We have a really cheap cupboard in our holiday home that we found at a thrift store. And it suffers badly from the wonky drawer syndrome. I can’t tell you how many times we tried to fix them. We added new slides, replaced the back, but it didn’t make any difference at all. I was so ready to use that cupboard as firewood when my hubby came up with a sneaky way to fix those broken drawers once and for all. This is what she looks like now.

And this is the terrible state she was in before.

UGH!!!! Horrible thing. Okay, maybe I’m being a bit too harsh. Our holiday home is on the South Coast of Natal in South Africa and the humidity plays havoc with cheap wood, making it bend and buckle in the most unflattering way.

So no matter what we tried she would always lose her drawers So if you have a cupboard that suffers from the same problem, I thought I’d share the hubby’s sneaky trick. Warning. It’s not pretty!!! Well from the outside she is……

.... the inside not so much. But hey, when you're on holiday in a small town, with limited tools you make do with what you've got. So here's what we did to fix those wonky drawers.............First things first; remove all the drawers and take them apart. Ours had these plastic sides which we could just screw off.

All you need are the drawer fronts. Save the other bits to make this puzzle platter or this adorable dog leash holder. Line the drawer fronts up neatly together to form one big piece. Use whatever you can find in the hardware stores to join the drawers together to form a door. We used perforated metal strips with holes and some of the drawer back pieces.

At this stage, the back of the "drawer door" looked like it could be used as a prop for a horror movie about Fort Knox. But, as they say in the classics "There's nothing that a little paint won't fix". So we sprayed the back of the door black to help disguise the sneaky fix and then hung the door on that little cupboard with two hinges.

We had two shelves cut at the hardware store and added them on the inside of the cupboard using L-shaped brackets. Add a few baskets for storage and that wonky drawer cupboard was ready for a game of hide 'n seek icon

And now I can enjoy all the original artwork on the gallery wall instead of stressing about wonky drawers.

Do you have one of those wonky drawer cupboards too. How did you fix it?

Great idea and far more practical than you know. My little cutie, just like yours will/did grow up into a messy teenager. NOTHING was ever put away. Out of frustration bought an amour with several deep shelves and two decent drawer in bottom. Her clothes magically started getting put away on shelves, one drawer held sox and undies and other her “treasures”. You are ahead of the game and way ahead $’s wise
