Yep, it will do that. Mostly the water runs down so the source will likely be above where it comes in. An experienced roofer will be able to find the source of the leak in seconds.

Hi Elizabeth. You can also check the drip edge flashing. We had a bad leak and it turned out that the drip edge on one of our dormers was slipping down.
If there is a slant to your roof, this may be coming from the top. Do mark it and then go from there. Have a crayon handy, to mark it, and then, in dry weather, you can put some gunk on it, and paint it, and all will be fine. Be careful, J.
