    Hi Nikki,

First, I am sorry for your situation. It is most important to determine the extent of the rot. Take a screwdriver and push it into the area of rot… Does it go in just a couple of inches or does it go in to the interior of your post?

If it goes in quite a ways, then I would seriously consider replacing the posts, albeit potentially expensive. It may be structurally necessary for your home.

If it is rotted just a little bit, Then you can remove the rat with any tool that you find if active, such as again a screwdriver or a scraper, etc.

Phil the missing areas with Bondo and even-up with your existing surface. If you have trim at the base of your columns, I would just replace that. Next step would be to prime and then paint.

Hope this is of some help, and best of luck with your project!

It is usually recommended to replace.

  • If the post is rotting, replace it. Determine what caused the rot and take steps to remedy the situation. Could it be sitting in water during periods of rain and snow?
