We have a rod iron porch railing one of the bottoms of the support that goes to the porch roof is severely rusted pretty much not there on the bottom the rest of the rails are alright they aren't pretty but it is what it is we have to figure out something before someone leans on it and rips it from the roof we have been brain storming but can't seem to figure out anything any suggestions we know we are going to have to cut up to the metal that hasn't rusted away then what? Looking for any permanent solution that won't look awful and will support.

  • "Wrought iron" is relatively easy to repair. All you need is a local welder to come make you new pieces and rework what you have to make it secure again. Paint it to keep from rusting and decaying. Clean, prime then paint. Flip through the yellow pages or Google for local welders or decorative iron artists / workers.

Have a welder add a piece to repair it

I posted a new post to answer your question, as I couldn’t find it, after I researched the answer.

Welders can’t weld rusted-through metal. You don’t want to pay a welder to go shopping for teplacemt metal bits, when you can find them yourself.

Welders that make house calls can get between $35-80 an hour.

So, why not start this process yourself and maybe you can install it yourself?

First, make a list of what you need to replace. It may be cheaper & easier to buy a whole new section of pre-fabricated rail at a big box DIY store. There’s all kinds of styles out there. Look at them, compare your measurements to what they have.

Keeping the bottom rail fastening brackets from rusting again, has to do with the post-base types and their fasteners. My link on the post I made explains those.

The best thing would be to replace. They are impossible to repair.
