Thank you , Kate for your response. Really like the idea of using a yard stick in place of the missing slats. Think the idea of improvising, instead of always buying materials, is very clever. I'll let you know how I make out with this solution once I get started.

Where are they? What are they made of? How long are they?
If wood and short, use paint stirrers to fill in gaps, longer, try a yard stick.
If a large section, fill in with colored glass squares to frame things out. weave cloth
through to hide the missing section.
