How can I prevent stains on my new shingle roof?

New roof shingles, and a new heater system that drains water down those shingles. I want to prevent that roof stain that I see on so many houses. I am thinking about a rain chain from gutter to ground, but to get the water from the outlet and to the gutter is what I have no idea for. Any suggestions?

This is the pipe that comes off the heating system. There is a small hose of some sort and that is where the water comes out. Nice shingles, right?

See the hose? It kind of blends in, which is nice, I don't want it TOO obvious. Maybe a longer hose clamped on, running to the corner of the house, where I can hang a rain chain (many clever ideas here! I love the one with clearance items and grey little pots and silver large chain because my house will be painted grey soon. )

Over twenty years in the heating business I have never seen anything like it. Maybe a California code???? You could attach a clear plastic hose to that hose.

A good question. Many people have black looking stains on their roofs probably due to the trees and enviorment.

The stains on roofs are from mold and fungus...put some zinc strips on your roof or clean with a zinc solution you can buy.

Many manufacturers today are incorporating zinc into their manufacturing process to help keep the roofs clean of mold and fungus!

If the unit is in your attic, it probably is on a drain pan, which will have a hole with plug in it. Mine has a PVC pipe attached to the drain hole and leading from there out to the fascia, where it drains outside. It's not on the roof at all. Most of the stains on the roofs are caused by the pipes which leach out chemicals. I believe many of them are made of lead.

THanks to all. I have seen it pour onto the roofing. I think what I see on other houses is the cleaning of the water, and the unclean parts next to it. Either way, I think I will attach a hose to it and then extend to the end of the roof to the gutter that will be installed in a few weeks.

No lead allowed in CA, so that isn't a factor here.

Zinc strips....mom has mold and fungus....I will pass that one along.

If I reroute the hose, I will need to poke another hole....so diversion it is.
